Potières d'Afrique - Voyage au coeur de la tradition contemporaine
Until 9 Septembre
Opening on 15.03.2018 at 19h
In the 1990s, eleven European ceramists, united on the initiative of the French artist Camille Virot, went to live in villages in West African countries, such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cameroon and Nigeria. Observing the women potters in action, and sometimes working with them, they brought back examples of pottery for daily use, several hours of films, notes and drawings made in situ, tools and a large number of photographs. This ensemble, now entrusted to, preserved, studied and recently presented at the Musée des Confluences in Lyon, is being lent to us by the institution. This is an opportunity for the Musée Ariana to showcase around sixty pieces of pottery whose sculptural opulence of forms and harmonious sobriety of decoration take us back to the gestures of everyday life and reveal the world of the women potters of Africa. Documentary markers shed light on the creative and distribution processes relating to these objects from the specific perspective of members of the same profession.
