FIFDH-Beats of the Antonov
Hajooj Kuka, Sudan/South Africa, 2014, 66’, vo arab, st fr
Swiss premiere
This profoundly original documentary immerses us in refugee camps in Sudan, a nation in the midst of an identity crisis, which appears to have lost everything under the raids of the Antonov bombers. The creation, in 2011, of a new state failed to put an end to decades of war. And yet, from the refugee camps emerges a singular and hope-fuelled music, mix of traditional rhythms and creative « beats ». With this unique film, which won the Audience Award at the most recent Toronto festival, young filmmaker Hajooj Kuka shows us that music can also be a powerful weapon against annihilation, a celebration of cultural identity, and a way to rebuild when one has lost everything. For this screening, the FIFDH has partnered with Geneva’s Museum of Ethnography.
